I am at home today. I have been slightly sick for a few days but nothing that stopped me from going to work. I went to bed last night assuming today would be much of the same. Before I went to bed, however, I took some medicine to treat the cold like symptoms I have been having in the hopes of getting a good night’s sleep. It was a behind the counter pseudoephedrine pill and I was anticipating a sound night’s sleep as this drug generally knocks me out. It did and then something interesting happened but we’ll get to that in a moment.
I took two 30 mg pills and then hit the sack with the intention to write a quick iPad blog post and maybe watch something on Netflix before the pills kicked in. I was a touch overly optimistic on how long I would have until I passed out. I never found anything to watch so I turned over and started pecking out a blog post. After a few sentences it became very difficult for me to keep my head up. I keep screwing up the post because as I would fall asleep my fingers would go nuts on the iPad. I would wake back up and there would be random breaks in the writing, words would have extra characters, and just a number of various errors. I realize I am prone to mistakes anyway but this was insane. I realized quite quickly that I would never be able to finish the post as intended and cut it off quickly. I then promptly passed out. Yesterday’s post is the result of this incident. I am going to leave it in its originally published state with a small disclaimer. There are some weird errors in the post that I think are kind of funny. Even the title is a little off don’t you think? This is all due to the early effects of the drug on my body. The “other” side effects would really blow me away a few hours later.
Somewhere between 12:00 and 1:00 AM I started waking up. My memory is a little hazy on some of this because I was both asleep and on medication so I can’t get too detailed but I know I was having some kind of crazy dream. I don’t remember what I was dreaming about as I write this. Maybe I remembered right as I woke up but now, at 10:00 most of it has faded away. What I do remember very clearly is that as I was becoming aware of being awake the dream changed. All of a sudden I was in some kind of technicolor fantasy world. Imagine a type of CandyLand where everything is bright and colors are deep and rich. I was standing around some kind of dwarf/elf drum circle. All of these little people were banging on these little candy colored drums. Do you remember that old video for “The Safety Dance” by Men Without Hats? Well, in the video there is a little person dressed up like a jester prancing around with a little stringed instrument. Now, imagine about a dozen of those guys but all dressed in the most brilliant Rainbow Bright type clothes drumming on drums that are colored like candy canes and you will start to get an idea of what I saw. The craziest thing is that I knew I was awake. I knew that I was feeling sick and was in bed yet I still saw this scene playing out around me. It was freaky and totally surreal. I don’t know if it counts as a hallucination but it is the closest thing I have ever personally experienced to hallucinating. After a few moments it was over and I was firmly in my bed now feeling like crap. Exhausted and unable to go back to sleep I stared at the wall for a while trying to understand the experience.
I don’t know if this was drug induced or just a weird side effect of waking up during a dream. However, if this is what happens when someone is on methamphetamine then I totally get why people take it. For a few moments it was amazing. I can only imagine what it must be like to get some kind of pure drug that can cause the brain to go crazy for an extended period of time. Honestly, I would kind of like to try something like that. Well, that is if it was completely non-habit forming, completely without long term side effects, and legal. Yeah, I would totally try a drug like that. It was totally weird, awesome, and a little frightening at the same time.
After that I came down hard. The sickness crept in and one of the other side-effects of the drug kicked in and I could not go back to sleep. I was to tired to get up but I could not fall asleep. I just stared at the clock for hours. When it came time to get to work I called in sick because I stared coughing and was so weak I could not get out of bed. Oh, and then there were the periods of being hot and then being cold. At the time I was worried that the flu was creeping in but I think I am safe from that at this point. I just have the bug that everyone in my family has had over the last few weeks. If I am lucky I will be fine after a day of rest.
I am contemplating taking the medication again tonight but I doubt I will unless I am feeling really bad. I need the sleep more than I want to experience the visions. Since this medication isn’t prescription I have to assume it was one of those rare, odd events and probably due more to me being sick than any drug. It was still fun and interesting though even if it only lasted a few seconds.
