I discovered something with my 2012 reading challenge that has nothing to do with reading. By setting a goal, I actually worked toward achieving something. I was motivated to read and to work toward achieving an end result. It’s kind of neat how that works out. Of course I have intellectually understood goal setting since I was a kid but somewhere along the way I forgot about the process. Probably about the time I started college I would guess. Certainly by the time I finished I had lost any focus on the future. Without goals I have found myself lost and without purpose. Kind of like an ice machine in the Arctic.
Anyway, the reading challenge thing made me think quite a bit about goals and how to reach them. I don’t yet know what goals I need to set for 2013 but I feel like figuring out where I want to be in a year will be a big step forward. I need to make changes in my life, big changes in order to be the person I want to be and have the life I want to lead. Goal setting can and should be a part of the change process. Once I figure out where I am going then maybe I can discover how to get there.
